One amongst the ‘Eightfold Path’ in Buddhism is Right Mindfulness. It teaches to “Become aware of your body, mind and feelings. Right Mindfulness is the focusing of one’s attention on one’s body, feelings, thoughts, and consciousness in such a way as to overcome craving, hatred, and ignorance.”* .
While there are many interpretations, what I find beautiful is that you can overcome ignorance and hatred by being mindful of your own self. There is a new warrior class these days, the clan of ‘Internet warriors’. They fight every thought they don’t agree with with all the hatred and filth they can muster. Reason they don’t, Respect they won’t. I have seen many great ideas and discussions go down the dump amid the cacophony of strong hatred. It deeply saddens me.
If only someone could alight a buddha within them? If only they could agree to disagree and reason instead of intimidate and threaten? If only there was more mindfulness?
May be we need another Buddha. Or may be the Sleeping Buddha of our collective needs to wake up now. May be he needs a nudge..from within each one of us..
